What equipment is required for soldering?

Selecting the right equipment for a good finishing work is essential. A soldering iron/gun and a solder wire are the two required items for soldering, even though other consumables and accessories can make the task easier.

Soldering irons are probably the most basic tool for soldering. They are used for assembling or repairing electronic components or for joining metal parts. There are various models available, both electric and gas operated. When working on electronic components that require more precision, we advise you to choose a small electric model. However, pay attention to the iron wattage as you would need a 25-40W (minimum) soldering iron to solder electronic components.

By comparison, soldering guns, are much more powerful, therefore more suitable for “heavy-duty” soldering of thick wires, copper tubes, and sheet metal. They are useful for both heavy electrical connections as well as metal work requiring a lighter touch. Heat guns and brazing torches are also better instruments for flame brazing metal joints: it releases a flame that is used to melt the metal around the pieces to be joined.
