OTDR launch boxes

A fiber launch box, also called OTDR launch box, launch cable or pulse suppressor, is a necessary equipment for performing accurate reflectometry measurements. Its use is mandatory to validate and certify a fibre network. Used with an OTDR test equipment, it minimizes the effect of OTDR dead zone during fibre optic testing which can affect the testing result if proper measure is not taken. Indeed, the dead zone of OTDR occurs when the detector become saturated with reflected light and, as it needs time to recover from the saturation, it cannot detect the backscattered signal accurately. An OTDR launch box can ensure that the dead zone happens in the box. It allows accurate visualisation of insertion loss and reflectance generated by both near and far connections.

It will greatly improve your test results. However, the results of the measurement depend on the measurement equipment used, but also on the quality of the fibre leader. Thus, it is recommended to check your equipment regularly.
